Why Kids Love It

TOP 20 THINGS TO DO ON YOUR BEACH VACATION-FUN FOR THE FAMILY!
Fill your lungs with salt air

Get sand between your toes. For a mile of beach with minimal development, visit Henderson Beach State Park which is located near Wal-Mart. There are plenty of covered picnic areas and restrooms. There is a small fee.

Chase some seagulls

Get a good tan but don’t forget the sunscreen, sunglasses and hat!

Ride a wave. But watch for the flag warnings. Red means don’t do it!

Watch the sun set. Two of our favorite spots are the bayside parks near Dewey Destin’s Seafood Restaurant, Calhoun Park and Captain Leonard Destin Park. No fees for entry and parking.

Learn some island songs

Hike a nature trail: Two of our favorites are Topsail Hill State Parkl which is a very interesting and unusual area since it is one of the few places in the world where fresh water lakes are in a coastal dune area. This is also one of the places with the largest sand dunes in Florida. The trails are wonderful through wooded hammock and around the lakes. The entrance is off State Road 30 A just as you turn off Hwy 98 on the right. There is a paved trail which takes you from the parking area to the beach through a lovely hammock area ending with an amazing view overlooking the beautiful water of the Gulf of Mexico. Another great trail is Grayton Beach Trail which is a loop and accessed from 30A just before Seaside. Florida’s award winning state parks all have small entrance fees. If you are 62, don’t forget to purchase your Golden Eagle Passport for free lifetime access to our many of our nation’s incredible National Parks.

Build a sandcastle,

Eat lots of seafood, for fresh seafood in a very informal atmosphere; our favorite is one of Destin’s oldest restaurants, Harbor Docks. It is our favorite for lunch. They also have a popular sushi menu. The location is wonderful right on the harbor which is one of the attractions for us. Dewey Destin’s is located with a view of Crab Island and is a terrific place for boat and people watching. You eat on a dock with umbrellas. The owner was a boat captain until the ban on net fishing made it too expensive to fish. Mrs. Destin was a first grade school teacher here. This is our grand children’s favorite and also one of ours. When we buy seafood, we always go to Destin Seafood and Icehouse which is located near Donut Hole (awesome for breakfast) on Hwy 98.
Relax with a good book; we have a Barnes and Noble book store in Destin. There is a terrific independent book store in Seaside called Sundog Books which we always visit when we are in the 30A area.
See a dolphin or two,
There are fun dolphin cruises, but we also frequently see dolphin anytime we are around the harbor. Another great place to see them is at Dewey Destin Seafood Restaurant.

Rent a wave runner

Catch a fish. We like to fish aboard The Destiny or The Destin Princess. Both are reasonably priced party boats, and we always catch fish. Since they are so comfortable, we also always have a wonderful boat ride.

Play putt putt golf. You might find discount tickets for The Track on line.

Play 18 holes on a signature golf course. Destin is a fabulous destination for golfers. Regatta Bay is a Robert Walker course and Kelly Plantation is Fred Couples, for example. Indian Bayou is a fun course with great prices located in Destin. Blue Water Bay is in Niceville. Lots of different courses in Sandestin. You get the picture!

Shop till you drop. Silver Sands is the country’s largest designer outlet mall and is located about five miles east of Destin. Bay Town Wharf has lots of restaurants with live music and free entertainment year round as well as some interesting boutiques. There is a boat near the entrance which can take you there instead of parking in the on-site garage which is a fun way to arrive. Grand Boulevard is an interesting area just east of Sandestin. Thirty A is a world to itself with Grayton Beach (Red Bar is a VERY popular and fun restaurant with frequent live entertainment), Watercolor, and Seaside great destinations for a day trip. We also enjoy the gulf front restaurant at Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club because of its waterfront location and super Sunday brunch.

Go snorkeling. The jetties are where the tour boats will take you. If you have your own equipment, it is very easy to go there on your own. You park near public beach access on Holiday Isle at Norriego Point Park and walk to the water, and have FUN!

Take a flashlight to the beach at night and find a ghost crab.

Big Kahunas Water Park, Buccaneer Pirate Cruise, Dolphin Cruise, Gulfarium Marine Park and the Okaloosa Island Pier.

MAKE MEMORIES THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME!
